Question

  1. A 100 gm sweet consists of milk and sugar in the ratio of 3:1.
    • If the weight of sugar in the sweet is \(x\) gm then, write the weight of milk in the sweet in terms of \(x\). [1]
    • Calculate the weight of milk and sugar in the sweet. [2]
    • If \(4, 5, p\) and \(25\) are in proportion, find the value of \(p\). [2]

Answer

Solution

Given that, a 100 gm sweet consists of milk and sugar in the ratio of 3:1.

  1. The weight of milk in the sweet is \(3x\) gm.

The weight of sugar in the sweet is \(1x\) gm.

Hence, the weight of milk in the sweet in terms of \(x\) is \(3x\) gm.

  2. According to the question, the total weight is 100 gm.

    \(3x + 1x = 100\)

    \(4x = 100\)

    \(x = \frac{100}{4}\)

    \(x = 25\)

    Hence:

    • The weight of milk is \(3x = 3 \times 25 = 75\) gm.
    • The weight of sugar is \(1x = 1 \times 25 = 25\) gm.
  3. Given that \(4, 5, p\) and \(25\) are in proportion, we write:

    \(\frac{4}{5} = \frac{p}{25}\)

    \(5p = 4 \times 25\)

    \(p = \frac{4 \times 25}{5}\)

    \(p = 4 \times 5\)

    \(p = 20\)
